Here's The Best Apps To Combat Feeling Isolated Whilst In Lockdown
Here in the UK, we’re on Lockdown Day 7.
For many like myself, self-isolation has been doing on for a lot longer. And naturally, it’s starting to take its toll on people. It’s human nature to miss physical contact with others and in-person communication, so if your housemate is also your bestie, count yourself lucky. But for those not so fortunate, living away from family and friends (or living alone), loneliness can certainly tiptoe its way into the frame. We are, however, lucky enough to live in an age where technology is on our side and we can fight dreaded isolation, well, isolation, with the help of apps and our trusty devices. Here’s just a few of the apps that you can count on during your time in lockdown.
FaceTime
An obvious favourite for any Applephile long before Covid-19, FaceTime is a sure fire way to video chat with friends and family around the clock from any Apple device or Mac operating system. Connect the entire family with the group video call option (it holds up to 32 people). Not got an Apple device? Don’t sweat it, WhatsApp offers a great one-to-one video call feature too.
Zoom
Previously predominantly reserved for work meetings, Zoom has become an easy way to connect multiple people together at once, through video and audio. Zoom comes in both paid and free versions, but don’t worry, the freebie still has pretty good offerings – you can have up to 100 participants in a single chat for up to 40 minutes. Meeting with the boss at 4, then happy hour at 5? Sounds delightful.
Google Hangouts
If you’re looking for a piece of tech, you can be sure that Google have got their answer to it somewhere. Similar to Zoom, Hangouts is an app or extension that can be added to your device or desktop and connects to your Gmail account. The free version allows up to 25 people to jump on a call, and if you need further persuading, lets you send GIFs. If you’re not looking for a group option, the sister app – Google Duo – is a good one-on-one option.
Skype
The old faithful that we all know and love. Skype has kept us Millennials connected since MSN began to phase out and we needed to find another programme that supported our love for using our webcams, and it’s still a perfect option to keep us in touch with people near and far.
House Party
House Party is quickly becoming the app of the Corona Age. Think Zoom, but with bells on. Those bells being Trivia, Heads Up and Quick Draw. Schedule you and your friends in for a wine party and enjoy an evening of games and laughs. You won’t even miss being at the bar.
Netflix Party
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Terri, Netflix Party? Why did you not lead with this? And you’re right, I’m sorry, but sometimes you have to save the best til last. Netflix Party is bringing movie night to quarantine, and it’s a way that you and your friends can simultaneously stream movies and series on Netflix, plus there’s a chat box to have a natter whilst watching. If you’re looking for to share-stream more than Netflix, twoseven offers a similar service but merges multiple streaming options including Hulu and Amazon. Throw some popcorn in the microwave, grab a blanket, and dim the lights. Odeon? Who’s she?
It’s so important to stay connected during this uncertain and anxiety-provoking time. Stay at home, save our NHS, and most importantly, keep safe.
