Manspreading Has Been Banned On Madrid's Public Transport System
Whilst guys can find it funny to shout "shut yer legs" at girls, I find it even funnier that there has been an official rule put in place to get men to shut their's. Yes you're reading this correctly, EMT Madrid has introduced a new sign on buses forbidding men from sitting with their legs to far apart. Spanish women are eternally grateful, because let's face it, there's not much worse than sitting on public transport next to a guy testing the strength of his trouser's crotch point.
The public transport company mentioned in a statement that the aim is to ensure everyone's personal space, and made the decision after consulting with the city's equality office. This was the response to Microcorrelatos Feministas - a Spanish feminist group - and the petition they launched named #MadridSinManspreading (Madrid Without Manspreading).
"The mission of this new icon is to remember the need to maintain civic behavior and to respect the space of everyone on board the bus," a company spokesperson said.
The service carries over 400 million passengers each year, so it goes without saying that women's bus journeys should now be a bit more comfortable. Muchas gracias, EMT, not all heroes wear capes.
P.S. TfL: are you taking notes?
